October 12th.
Columbus day. People in this country have mixed
feelings about Europeans, something like a love
and hate relationship... they have plenty of reasons
for that.
We're waiting for the bus that's going to take
us to the city. When we were in the bus, coming
here from the Amazon, Jan told me the story of one
of the scripts he wrote. It's about the Incas. a
really great story. But once in the town and when
we went to the cabin, he told me the other story,
the one he wants me to have a role in.
It's the story of this woman who lives in Cuba,
her father owns slaves and the city itself. He wants
her to get married. She doesn't.
Her rebellion takes her to do things that are
simply amazing. I love the story and for what I
heard, it should be a great film. He's committed
to it. The tricky part is that there are very violent
scenes.
It takes place in a time where people were
fanatics, religion was pervasive and the practices
were really twisted sometimes. Well, in the story
the woman witness how cruelly slaves are punished,
she compares them to the early Christians because
of their suffering and she identifies with them.
She imagines herself being in their place.
In the role Jan wants for me, I would play
the part of the woman and the characters in her
imagination. There are many scenes where I would
be in very strong, and painful situations. And this
is what Jan wants to rehearse from now on.
We started in the cabin.
The first thing we did is plan the scene We
were going to start with a simple escene.
The cabin was perfect. There was a wooden posts
in the middle, which held the second level, there
were beams across, perfect to hang somebody. There
were very thick ropes, that the people here use
to tie wood together and we made a whip out of strips
of sugar cane. They produce a very loud sound.
I had to prepare myself first.
